AI systems for remote and restricted environments
We develop and deploy AI systems around the conditions of the assignment. That can include unreliable communications, restricted data movement, limited power, or equipment operating far from regular technical support.
The system may run entirely on site or combine local processing with approved remote resources. We can take on the complete technical assignment or an agreed part of a larger programme, including installation, handover and a team to operate the system for an agreed period.
The work you can commission.
A commission can begin with investigation or an existing specification. We bring together AI, software, equipment and the specialists needed to deliver the work, using AI throughout research, development and testing.
The scope can include model selection and evaluation, custom applications, connections to existing equipment, hardware procurement and assembly, and deployment. Systems range from portable devices to workstations, servers and larger installations. The workload, site conditions and available resources determine the scale.
We can work directly with your organisation or take responsibility for a defined work package under a lead contractor, with interfaces, reporting and acceptance agreed together.
When communications are limited.
Denied, degraded, intermittent or limited-bandwidth communications are often described as DDIL. We establish which functions must continue locally, what information must be available on site, and which work can wait. Reconnection needs its own rules for synchronisation, conflicting changes and recovery.
Edge computing places processing close to the people and equipment using it. In defence programmes, this may form part of a tactical edge requirement. Local models, remote model APIs and shared infrastructure each have a place when the assignment allows them.
Where network isolation is required, an air-gapped configuration separates the system from other networks. Approved information transfers, software updates and maintenance procedures need to be designed around that isolation. Data access and processing locations are agreed explicitly.
Equipment the site can support.
Size, weight and power (SWaP) constraints shape what can be transported, installed and kept running. We consider compute capacity, battery duration, cooling, storage, environmental exposure and physical service access together.
A small device suits some tasks; others need substantial infrastructure. Power arrangements may include batteries, backup supplies or solar generation where feasible, sized to the workload and site conditions. Expeditionary logistics can include transport, installation equipment, spare parts and the arrangements needed to reach and support a temporary site.
Test the work it needs to do.
We agree how to judge the system against its intended tasks and operating conditions. Verification can cover model behaviour, data access, loss of connectivity, power interruption, restart, recovery and operator controls. Actions requiring human review are identified during design.
Installation includes checks with the people and equipment at the site. Urgent assignments may require work to proceed in parallel or an initial capability followed by further delivery; timing depends on scope, access, equipment and the team available.
Keep it working, then hand it over.
Where the assignment requires it, we can assemble, prepare and deploy a technical team to operate the systems we build for an agreed period. The scope defines their responsibilities, support arrangements and transition to your own team.
Handover can include commissioned source code, build and configuration files, equipment records, test results, operating instructions and training. We identify third-party components, licences and any continuing service dependencies so future maintenance and development can be planned. Continued engineering or support can be agreed as part of the assignment.
